Vanuatu wants UN to discuss West Papua

Vanuatu's parliament has passed a motion to raise issues at the United Nations over the status of the Indonesian-administered region of West Papua.

The unanimous motion calls for the UN General Assembly to help clarify the legality of the process under which West Papua was ceded from the Netherlands to Indonesia in the 1960s.

Vanuatu wants the General Assembly to seek an advisory opinion from the UN's International Court of Justice on the legality of the 1962 agreement.

A referendum in 1969 saw West Papuan representatives vote for integration with Indonesia.

But many say Jakarta interfered with the poll.
