Papuan Millitant Shot to Death in Raid

VIVAnews - A raid conducted by the police and Indonesian military in Puncak Jaya, Papua, has resulted in the death of the member of armed group Free Papua Movement (OPM). The authorities shot down the suspect in Goburuk Village, Yamo District on Monday, May 17.

Papua Police Spokesperson Sr. Comm. Agus Rianto said the member of the group was taken down because he refused to surrender and even attempted to fight back. “They were trying to run away and fight, that’s why we had to fire,” he said in a text message to VIVAnews.

In the raid, the authorities also seized several AK 47 rifles. One person was gunned down while the others managed to escape. “The death guy was allegedly WT and was included in the wanted list of Papua Police on the shooting against PT Modern street project workers a while ago,” Rianto says.

Both the police and military officers are still in pursuit of the runaway group members. They have asked the public to file a report upon seeing their presence.

Rianto went on by saying that the body of the death suspect is being kept at Mulia Hospital, Puncak Jaya to be identified.

Since a few days ago, the authorities have been combing the areas of Puncak Jaya to search for the armed separatist group that has been spreading terror in the region.
